Veel werk gaat zitten in het opnieuw opbouwen van de unieke Surf Town op de Sint Joris baai. De organisatie verwacht ook dit jaar weer een grote opkomst.]]> Over 4 weken vindt de jaarlijkse internationale windsurf wedstrijd, de Curaçao Challenge, plaats. Veel werk gaat zitten in het opnieuw opbouwen van de unieke Surf Town op de Sint Joris baai. De organisatie verwacht ook dit jaar weer een grote opkomst.

De Surf Town is een dorp met activiteiten, bars, muziek, geheel in stijl van de windsurfcultuur. Een groot deel van Surf Town wordt van de grond af aan opgebouwd met onder andere hutten gemaakt van bamboe, bedekt met palmbladeren en versierd met beschilderde drijfhoutjes.

Op 14 april heeft een grote groep surfers en liefhebbers van de sport hard doorgewerkt om het grootste deel af te krijgen. Omdat Kusters Trading zo onder de indruk was van het enthousiasme van deze zogenoemde ‘Weekend Warriors’, sponsorden zij de Polar, wijn en t-shirts.

De Curaçao Challenge vindt plaats van 17 tot en met 20 mei op 3 verschillende locaties op Curaçao. Er strijden meer dan 80 deelnemers in verschillende disciplines tegen elkaar, van slalomwedstrijden tot spectaculair kunst- en vliegwerk in het Freestyle. Na het wereldkampioenschap van vorig jaar is de bekendheid van het evenement zo groot dat de sponsoren zich in grote getallen hebben aangemeld, zoals Insel Air als hoofdsponsor, Goisco, de Koninklijke Marine en Polar.

De organisatie wil een evenement neerzetten dat niet alleen draait om het windsurfen, maar vermaak biedt voor de hele familie, de hele dag door. Dit betekent gedurende 4 dagen verschillende vormen van entertainment, waaronder een Kids Corner met speciale workshops, kitesurf shows, wakeboard shows, SUP races, live muziek in de avonden, surprise acts, kampvuren en DJ’s.

Het doel van dit evenement is Curaçao als windsurf bestemming te promoten. Curaçao heeft vergelijkbare windsurf condities als Bonaire en Aruba; eilanden die al jaren internationaal aanzien hebben binnen de windsurfwereld. De wedstrijd biedt een unieke kans voor lokale talenten om zich internationaal te profileren en geeft de jeugd een stimulans om te gaan windsurfen.

Last year the Curacao Challenge was honoured to host the IFCA Slalom World Championships. Even though there was not a lot of wind, the event was a succes. It turned out to be a funfilled event for both participants and viewers! This year the event is again for surfers of all ages and all levels. We hope last years event inspired surfers to improve their skills and viewers to attempt a new sport? We look forward to your participation in the 2012 Curacao Challenge.
